Permafrost

What happens when ground that is permanently frozen thaws and decomposes?

Permafrost if you break that word up is exactly sounds like what it means: ground that is permanently frozen. This article both articulates what permafrost is and why it is of major concern to climate scientists as temperatures continue to increase.

"Think of broccoli that you’ve got in the freezer. As long as it’s frozen, it will remain stable for years. As soon as you pull it out, it’ll go mushy and soon begin to unleash the stench of decay... As the planet warms, this permafrost is thawing, releasing huge amounts of carbon and methane,"
